Kara Fasıl
for Augmented Piano

Composition, production and mixing.
Quadrophonic piece for loudspeaker concert.

Kara Fasıl was the master’s work of Kaan Bulak at University of Arts Berlin. Under the supervision composer Prof. Dr. Martin Supper and audio engineer Jean-Boris Szymczak of Studio P4, Bulak had the opportunity to find his own path of composing and producing sound art.

Kara Fasıl is a work that derives from traditional Ottoman court music and finds its modern links. In five movements Bulak explores cyclical compositions of the 17th century as well as sonic qualities of the instruments of the time. Instead of using the original instruments, Bulak translates them into an electro-acoustic ensemble. An upright piano is the solely used sound source for the whole piece.
